Firebird Chamber Platform: The Avalon Trio
This is the second in the Firebird Chamber Platform series of concerts giving a much needed opportunity for smaller scale ensembles to perform under the Firebird banner. A delightful programme of music by three of the greatest names from the 18th and 19th century show off the musical capabilities of this wonderful instrumental combination.
Haydn’s best-known piano trio, the Gypsy Rondo dates from 1795 when he was visiting London. It’s nickname came about because of its Rondo finale in ‘Hungarian’ style.
The Trio Élégiaque was written by an 18-year-old Rachmaninoff in 1893. It was no doubt influenced by Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio premiered in Moscow just the year before. Subtitled À la mémoire d’un grand artiste it is dedicated to the memory of his close friend and mentor Nikolai Rubenstein.
