15 Years of Firebird

A concert to Celebrate 15 Years of the London Firebird Orchestra

Vaughan Williams The Wasps Overture
Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending
Sarasate Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25
Sibelius The Swan of Tuonela, Op. 22 no. 2
Stravinsky Firebird Suite (1945)

Launched in 2012 with Dame Judi Dench as Patron and Marc Corbett-Weaver as Artistic Director, the London Firebird Orchestra supports immensely talented young musicians at the start of their careers.

Praised by Forbes as “a youthful ensemble marked by curiosity, dedication, and artistic drive,” the orchestra celebrates its 15th birthday with a large-scale concert at Chelsea’s Cadogan Hall, on a theme of flying creatures.

The journey begins in England with Vaughan Williams’s Overture to the Wasps and The Lark Ascending, in tribute to the orchestra’s English heritage. A feisty flight to Spain brings Sarasate’s dazzling Carmen Fantasy, the melodic Habanera of which opens with the famous line “love is a rebellious bird.”

After the interval, we swan off to Finland for Sibelius’s serenely beautiful “Swan of Tuonela” before the orchestra’s name-sake delivers a rousing finale in Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

Conductor George Jackson has a longstanding association with the orchestra, dating from 2014, is Music Director of the Amarillo Symphony in Texas and comes fresh from the stages of Grange Park Opera, Opera Holland Park and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The multi-award-winning international violin star Yury Revich is soloist. Yury also has a close relationship with the orchestra, appearing twice each season.

We hope you will join us to celebrate 15 years of Firebird.
