Mendelssohn Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Op. 27
Beethoven Symphony no. 3 in E flat, Op. 55 Eroica
Conductor Michael Thrift
We celebrate the opening concert of Firebird’s 2022 season with works by two of the great classical composers of the 19th century.
Inspired by the titles of two poems by Goethe, Mendelssohn’s concert overture reminds us that before the days of steam, a totally calm sea was cause for alarm. It is only when the wind at last rises that the ship can continue on its journey.
Beethoven’s celebrated third symphony broke all the conventions of the day and is often considered to be the first Romantic symphony. Originally composed ‘to celebrate the memory of a great man’, Beethoven’s dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte on the title page was torn up when Beethoven heard that Bonaparte had declared himself Emperor.
