Firebird appears in the London Chamber Music Society’s season for the fifth time, this time in the 150-year-old society’s new home, St John’s Waterloo. Their season focuses on a theme of Visions and Spirits.
Mendelssohn’s bewitching Overture to a Midsummer Night’s Dream makes for a rousing opener. Following this we are joined by pianist Ariel Lany for the first time.
Ariel won the third prize in the 2021 Leeds Piano Competition before being awarded the Prix Serdang of CHF 50,000 in Switzerland. He has performed concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Israel Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonia Viva and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra – and enjoys a glittering international career.
After the interval we enjoy a short work by Puccini, inspired by white Chrysanthemum flowers and written in tribute of the late King Amadeo I of Spain, son of the Italian King Vittorio Emmanuelle II.
Haydn’s riveting Miracle Symphony concludes – one of the London symphonies premièred in the Hanover Square Rooms in 1791.
