Haydn with Willard
Haydn’s jubilantly lively Cello Concerto no. 1 in C was thought lost in the mists of time until its sudden discovery in 1961 in the Prague National Museum. We are delighted to introduce the prize-winning YCAT artist Willard Carter as soloist in the concerto, joining us for the first time.
Michael Thrift conducts as we also present Beethoven’s eighth Symphony with its lively dancing second movement paying tribute to the invention of the metronome by Johann Maelzel.
Mozart’s dramatic opera Idomeneo was a rapturous success in Munich and is often considered the first of his absolute masterpiece operas. We open with its rousing overture and are joined by the celebrated Australian soprano Sky Ingram. She sings the lead character Ilia’s two fabulously energetic arias. Sky’s voice is world renowned and she comes to us fresh from the stages of the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Garsington and Sydney Opera House.
This dazzling feast of classical delights is not to be missed.
