Firebird’s 2017/18 Season concludes with our annual Summer Concert at St Paul’s Covent Garden – and this year we head to the States for an all-American-themed evening to be remembered. Copland’s dramatic Fanfare, performed by brass and crashing percussion, is contrasted with Barber’s soul-searching Adagio for Strings, before the whole orchestra performs Bernstein’s grandiose Overture to Candide.
Our Artistic Director Marc Corbett-Weaver performs Gershwin’s jazz-influenced Rhapsody in Blue, preceded by his classic song from Porgy & Bess, Summertime. After the interval we hear the world première of the new work by the winner of the Firebird Composer of the Year 2017, before Firebird’s Michael Thrift conducts the New World Symphony.
This concert offers a feast of delights from the Land of Opportunity performed by a large orchestra – a perfect way to spend a summer’s evening.
