Eroica

Eroica!

Firebird gets 2022 underway with a flourish and an orchestral programme of music by Mendelssohn and Beethoven on Tuesday 1 February…

Inspired by the titles of two poems by Goethe, Mendelssohn’s concert overtureCalm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Op. 27 reminds us that before the days of steam when a totally calm sea was cause for alarm. It is only when the wind at last rises that the ship can continue on its journey.

Beethoven’s celebrated Symphony No. 3 in E flat, Op. 55 Eroica  broke all the conventions of the day and is often considered to be the first Romantic symphony.

Originally composed ‘to celebrate the memory of a great man’, Beethoven’s dedication to Napoleon on the title page was torn up when Beethoven heard that Bonaparte had declared himself Emperor.

The 40-piece orchestra will be conducted by our regular Principal Guest Conductor, Michael Thrift with leader Calyssa Davidson:
