THIS EVENT IS BEING RESCHEDULED TO THURSDAY 10 JUNE 2021
Dvorak Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104
Winner of the Firebird Young Composer of the Year Competition New Work (World Première)
Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 (Pathétique)
Conductor Michael Thrift
Cello Aleksei Kiseliov
The opening concert of Firebird’s 2019/20 season celebrated the key of A, and we conclude with B. Aleksei Kiseliov joins us for Dvorak’s magnificent Cello Concerto in B minor – one of the Czech composer’s final works written during his time in America as President of the New York Conservatory. Aleksei enjoys a busy international solo career alongside his position as Principal Cello of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. We look forward to premièring the winning piece of the Firebird Young Composer of the Year Competition, before playing Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony in B minor, with all its passion, despair and love.
“Conducted by Michael Thrift, the small but sonorous orchestra fill St John’s Church with Il Tabarro’s mysterious, dark tones: it feels deeply contemporary, with sinuous lines and sour harmonies creating a brooding, desperate mood.”
